Which battery chemistry?
Each chemistry trades cost against lifespan and maintenance — the best choice depends on how hard you cycle it:
- AGM
- Sealed, maintenance-free and lower cost. Good for UPS backup and lighter cycling where up-front price matters most.
- GEL
- Sealed deep-cycle with strong tolerance for heat and deep discharge — well suited to solar and inverter duty in a warm climate.
- LiFePO4 (lithium)
- The longest cycle life, deepest usable capacity and lightest weight, for daily-cycle solar storage where total lifetime cost is what counts.

What is the difference between GEL, AGM and lithium batteries?
AGM is the lowest-cost sealed option for lighter backup use; GEL handles deep discharge and heat well for solar and inverter duty; LiFePO4 lithium offers the most cycles, deepest usable capacity and least weight for daily solar storage.
Can I use a car battery for my inverter?
No. Starter batteries are built for short high-current bursts, not repeated deep discharge, and fail quickly in inverter service. Use a deep-cycle battery like the GEL, AGM or LiFePO4 units Vorttek supplies.
How many batteries do I need?
